For six days and nights in a shipyard warehouse on the Willamette River north of downtown Portland, Portland Fashion Week showcased the products of a boom in Portland fashion design that is at an all-time high after eight years of growth. Portland has not only hundreds of independent fashion, jewelry, and accessories designers, it has seen the opening, in the last couple of years, of myriad local boutiques to stock and sell those goods.

There’s no stopping Oscar de la Renta. The acclaimed designer first introduced his ready-to-wear label in 1965 and he’s still going strong. Over the years, de la Renta has received numerous honors including the Council of Fashion Designers of America’s 2000 and 2007 Womenswear Designer of the Year Awards and the CFDA’s lifetime achievement award in 1989. NY1 caught up with de la Renta at a pre-fall show held at a former church on Park Avenue.

“I would hope some of the designers would mix it up this season. Unless you were Eastern European, white, extremely skinny … you didn’t fit into the shows last season,” says Nigel Barker, the photographer and judge on TV’s “America’s Next Top Model.” “Some shows had just one black model,” Barker says, adding that he found the shows monotonous, visually unexciting and depressing.
