Style Squad to rate Oscar red carpet fashion

An aside; the Oscars have become as much about who dresses the winning ladies as it is about who takes home the golden statue. Usually, that honor goes to well-established designers, or European design houses with beaucoup bucks (think: Oscar de la Renta, Valentino). But, occasionally, a hot-shot newcomer can cut through the red carpet tape and get their design on a big name actress.

Fashion Designers Behind the Political Look

There has always been this misconception that a suit is the only outfit that one can wear to portray a serious and a decent look, says Ms Lucy Rao, the managing director of Rialto Fashions and one of the designers who worked on the party uniforms. There was a bevy of colours to pick from: screaming orange, royal blue, blood shot red, snow white, and jungle green. Ms Rao says the idea of the screaming colours is to uniquely brand the party that each politician represents.

Food, gifts, fashion … at ‘Kumba Mi Yabba’ fair

A major highlight of the fair will be a fashion show on December 22. The show, dubbed ‘Technicolour Explosion,’ will feature the work of nine of Jamaica’s youngest and newest fashion designers who are selected to design a five-piece clothing line, using colours and trends for spring and summer of 2008. Miss Jones said the designers have benefited from a series of workshops on fashion trends and marketing, and would be showcasing sports, casual, cocktail, formal and swim wear.

Becks buys designer present for Posh’s Xmas stocking

David Beckham has bought wife Victoria a 750 pound (NZ$1,981) book for Christmas. The Los Angeles Galaxy soccer star has secretly splashed out on a limited edition tome, signed by one of Victoria’s favourite fashion designers Valentino. A source said: “It will make for some good toilet reading for Victoria. Most people might get a gardening book in their stocking - but Posh gets this.” Just 2,000 copies of the book, Valentino Garavani: First Name in Fashion , were published.

FERRE FACELIFT FOR YOUTH: IT Holding SpA, parent company of Gianfranco Ferrй, is working on the relaunch and restyling of the brand’s younger line, GF Ferrй, and has tapped Stefano Citron and Federico Piaggi to help on the new design, WWD has learned. The two young designers report to Ferrй’s creative director, Lars Nilsson, who joined the company in September. Citron and Piaggi previously worked together at Mila Schцn and Byblos.

Designer chooses Belmont to open Dammi boutique

An upscale women’s clothing boutique with locally designed items became the latest addition to downtown Belmont last week. Veronica Pearson, a fashion designer who studied at the Art Institute of Charlotte, opened Dammi (pronounced “dah-mee”) at 1 Woodrow Ave., just off Main Street. The boutique is in the renovated front portion of a building occupied by Belmont Electrical Co.

Never Mind What”s in Them, Bags Are the Fashion

Over at Bergdorf Goodman, staff members held secretive deliberations that stretched late into the night for nine months. The focus of all this scurrying was not this fall s couture line or next spring s resort collection. It was shopping bags. Once a flimsy afterthought in American retailing used to lug a purchase home from the store, then tossed into the trash the lowly, free store bag is undergoing a luxurious makeover.

Climate change will have a profound effect on fashion

According to Jo Paoletti, a professor of American studies at the University of Maryland and an expert in apparel design and the history of textile and clothing, climate change can lead to a surge in fashion innovations. “Remember Jimmy Carter’s sweaters from the 1970s energy crisis? With Seventh Avenue proclaiming that ‘green is the new black,’ we can expect a surge in fashion innovations in response to climate change,” said Paoletti.
