Fashion designers made the final adjustments as models stepped into their creations before their work was showcased to the public. Bright personalities were reflected with bold colours while a mixture of soft satin, lace and ruffles showed more feminine styles. The event displayed an array of work from both the first and second year Diploma in Fashion Design students.

The “Petal by Petal Fashion Show” began seven years ago when the sorority’s founding president’s mother was diagnosed with the disease. The group is working with the Columbus Cancer Clinic to provide free ovarian cancer risk assessment, prevention and support services to uninsured Asian American women.

The event was well supported by the community with many residents volunteering their time and services. It was also an opportunity for students from the local school to exhibit their talents. The models for the evening included students from Opononi Area School, residents and members of the girls’ rugby team. The models styled their own outfits from clothing donated by the resource centre and many of the girls altered and designed unique outfits from the clothing they found.

Kernighan’s collection started when she searched antique shops for old garments to make clothing for her handcrafted porcelain dolls. Some of the clothing was too beautiful to cut up and her collection started to take shape.

On October 17th, EarthPledge presented a FutureFashion show in New York. This is the only event of all that I actually attended. I was a little disappointed by the presentation of twelve looks, only because I had seen four of them back in 2005 from the first EarthPledge event. Apparently several of those same pieces made their way down Seattle s runway as well, as Oscar de la Renta is not a name we typically associate with organic cotton.

This upscale Scottsdale lounge hosts “Pretty in Purple,” a birthday bash for Scottsdale Fashion Week model Xaviera of the Agency Arizona. DJ Tricky T will spin funk, rock and mash ups, but the bar will be packed, so we doubt there’ll be a ton of dancing. Expect to mingle with gorgeous women and men from all over the Valley who make a living looking fabulous. And if that’s not a fun Friday, we don’t know what is. Do not expect, however, any cake.

When the apartment opened for business at 11 a.m., about 35 women arrived to buy the brightly colored silk and cotton saris, salwar kurtas (matching sets of long shirts and pants) and tunics. Within an hour, most of the shopping was completed. Women may spend four times more at these shows than they would in a mid-range priced store, but they also have the chance to buy something unique and handmade.

Last year nearly 4,000 folks visited Scottsdale Fashion Week’s debut. Since then, the event has grown into a four-day destination highlighting Scottsdale’s fine living, fashion and beauty. This year, Scott said that number could more than triple during the week of events and activities, giving visitors another reason to visit Scottsdale during the shoulder season months that lead up to winter, the Valley’s busiest season for vacationers.
