Paris fashion trends strong, safe and sombre

Is jewellery the new handbag? A shift to bold accessories have some believing that after handbags and shoes, this will be the next area that designers turn into must-have status symbols. Here are some other Parisian trends for fall 2008: TOP IT OFF: The hat comes back big, bold and sometimes sculptural. CUFF ME: Necklaces, cuffs and bracelets are oversized and arty. Dries Van Noten went one step further, cleverly stringing bangles onto a necklace.

Designers release spring fashion lines

Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana turned back time to 1979 at D&G, and not only because the models sauntered down the runway to Michael Jackson’s “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough.” Siri TollerГёd opened the show wearing a ruffled, A-line mini dress with gold detail, and it didn’t stop there. Belted waists, denim flares and vests, and (naturally) fringe, were ubiquitous in D&G’s Spring 2008 show.

Spring, Summer Fashion Forecast

Jinteok’s collection never fails to impress. On a white floored catwalk, models walked out wearing minimalist baby doll dresses with puffed sleeves, pared-down balloon skirts and A-line shapes. Cheerful colors such as orange, red, yellow, pink and blue popped up on sporty striped shirts and ruffled tops. The designer used silk chiffon, taffeta, shantung silk, tulle and jersey fabrics for her collection.

‘Modern Art’ by Sue Wong at Mercedes-Benz LA Fashion Week Spring 2008

Her creations are individually hand-beaded, embroidered and finished by true artisans. Born in 1949, the Asian designer was never formally trained in fashion. She moved to the US with her family in 1955 escaping communist China. At 19 she opened her own boutique selling handcrafted gowns made from vintage clothing of Shanghai.

Olivier Theyskens mixes raves and black-tie at sunlit spring fashion show in Paris

The displays capped a diverse week with competing trends. While some designers fell for bright prints and fit-and-flare dresses with full skirts, others drew from men’s fashion with no-frills tailoring in somber shades. Stars including musicians Kanye West and Courtney Love pressed into the Vuitton show, held in a tent in the courtyard of the Louvre museum where models paraded in flashy outfits inspired by U.S. artist Richard Prince.
