Falling into fashion
Media Credit: Trent Barnes Fall is the time when leaves cover the ground, the wind changes temperature and fashion trends leave everyone wanting more. Sierra Stieber, a sophomore apparel design and manufacturing major from Plano, said she believes fashion can be addicting. “Everyone wants to keep up with the trends and look their best,” she said.
“Fashion is a form of personal expression.” Christina Jackson, a junior apparel design and manufacturing major from Christoval, said some aspects of fashion change with the different seasons. “It’s about the colors,” Jackson said. “Right now, it’s bright colors like red, green and pink because of summer.
For the fall, it will be about subdued colors like brown, sienna and gray - lots of gray.” For those with different styles, Rachel Anderson, director and instructor of Texas Tech’s apparel manufacturing and design program, said strong ’80s colors - like fluorescents and cobalt blue - are making a comeback, as are plastic accessories, such as big earrings and items that are bejeweled. Besides color, Jackson said styles of clothing and material are evolving, too.
“Wide-legged pants that are squared at the bottom are in style,” she said, “as well as knitted wear, like shirts and sweaters. Shirt-dresses are a coming trend too. I think it will be huge.” Anderson said dresses are the new thing. “Many women are now wearing dresses to work,” she said. “From previous years, I’d say dresses were about 40 percent of the style in New York. Now, it’s 80 percent.” Anderson said fashion is taking an opposite spin on the things that used to be in style.
