You can be the hit of the party with a little research and thought. Try thumbing through magazines like Vanity Fair and People for inspiration. Snag an idea from the headlines. You could become a character or characters from your favorite TV show. Don’t go as the actor; go as the character they play! Grab six friends and be America’s next top models. (Naturally, someone would need to be Tyra.) Try an obscure first lady and be tongue-in-cheek about it.
Finding costumes for less-traditional characters is much easier and softer on the wallet. Many times your closet will have the majority of the items you may need - sans wig, of course.
