Fashion shows bright future
The event was well supported by the community with many residents volunteering their time and services. It was also an opportunity for students from the local school to exhibit their talents. The models for the evening included students from Opononi Area School, residents and members of the girls’ rugby team. The models styled their own outfits from clothing donated by the resource centre and many of the girls altered and designed unique outfits from the clothing they found.
“We wanted to give these girls a chance to style their own outfits and to be proud of what they could create. “Amazing talent surfaced,” says Lisa Anne Herk, who organised much of the event and was the stage manager on the night. The Wekaweka Valley Community Trust, which runs the resource centre as well as other organisations and events in the area, sponsored the evening and the profits from the event will be donated to Hokianga Health.
“We wanted to give something back to the community,” says Shannon Ware, who had the original idea for using the resource centre’s abundance of clothing to put on a fashion show. The Waimamaku Resource Centre provides a variety of services including internet, phone, fax and photocopying use as well as information, books and clothing and is open every week day.
