Fashion students showcase their designs

Fashion designers made the final adjustments as models stepped into their creations before their work was showcased to the public. Bright personalities were reflected with bold colours while a mixture of soft satin, lace and ruffles showed more feminine styles. The event displayed an array of work from both the first and second year Diploma in Fashion Design students.

Second year fashion student and organiser Sharon Geddis said the event was a chance for students to show everything from pattern work and drawings to design work and garments. First year students chose their own theme from casual day wear to glamorous party wear, while second year students focused on bridal wear. Fashion School co-ordinator and tutor Janice Friend said designers were encouraged to portray their individuality through their designs.

Mrs Geddis looked into the past for fashion inspiration. She loved historical fashion from the days of the Tudors and the renaissance. Her work had a romantic feel to it. Second year fashion student Sapphire Patten had designed a wedding dress and mother of the bride outfit for an upcoming wedding. It was a challenge working outside her usual style. She liked designing figure hugging pieces showing the curves of the female body. She learnt a lot from working with her first clients.

Designing is as much about listening to the needs of clients as it was creating the outfits. Tutor Brian Molyneux said in reality 90 per cent of fashion design was dictated by clients and market trends. Mr Molyneux said the show would show that each student had evolved their own personal style.
