Another issue I see is the inherent privilege necessary for getting away with shoplifting. Part of the art of theft requires blending in and looking innocent, which is loaded with class (and racial) implications. The cute, clean, white university student is much less likely to get searched than the brown teenaged boys when a department store alarm system is set off. Furthermore, for these same reasons the people who are more likely to get caught stealing are those who actually need to steal.
Using oppressive systems in this way while making a claim to radical politics seems hypocritical and distasteful, to say the least. I think I’ll stick to being a good girl and shamefully give Dov Charney my cash. I can only hope he’ll use it to buy a soul and make everything right in my happy land of consumer culture.
